Michael E Behen, PhD

    CEO, Clinical Director

Dr. Michael E. Behen, a licensed psychologist, is the Director of The Imagine Center for Psychological Health. He initiated the center in 2008, in in the hope of creating a center that would be able to provide high quality care to children, adults, and families in Southeastern Michigan - with a major emphasis on providing such services to those with the least resources and ability to obtain such services; and over the past decade, the center has grown to now provide such service to a very large number of families across the area.

Dr. Behen is also an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. In this role, he directs the Neuropsychology Clinics, in the Department of Pediatric Neurology, and also the Neuropsychological Component of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM) Translational Imaging Center. Dr. Behen is also an NIH funded neuroscience researcher, and works as part of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Translational Imaging Center, a world-renowned neuroscience research laboratory. Dr. Behen’s current research interests revolve around the concepts of neurodevelopment and neuroplasticity and in this work he applies comprehensive neurocognitive and behavioral evaluations and advanced multimodal brain imaging tools in order to identify the functional and structural neural correlates of various developmental (autism spectrum disorder, social communication problems, language disorder, motor problems), neurologic (Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis), and psychiatric (Tourette’s Disorder, depression, attention deficit problems) disorders. He has contributed numerous articles to the scholarly literatures in the above areas.

Current research projects include the functional and structural neural correlates of early severe social deprivation, neural correlates of differential care settings and behavioral phenotypes in Chinese children orphaned by AIDS, and neural correlates of various developmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorders, language disorder) and neurologic (e.g., Sturge Weber Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis) conditions.  The team at The Imagine Center for Psychological Health is also presently validating a comprehensive measure aimed at fully quantifying developmental and behavioral concerns in individuals with developmental concerns, and also evaluating the role of telehealth/virtual service delivery in the field of mental health.

Dr. Behen, in his clinical (and research) practice(s), has performed and/or supervised comprehensive neuropsychological assessments on many, many thousands of children and adults with various neurodevelopmental, neurologic, and psychiatric problems.

Dr. Behen also has treated, and/or supervised the treatment of, numerous children, adults, couples, and families in his therapeutic work at various centers including the  Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and at The Imagine Center for Psychological Health locations as well.  Dr. Behen also continues to provide clinical and research training to the many clinicians who work at the center.

Dr. Behen oversees and directly supervises all administrative and clinical operations at the Imagine Center for Psychological Health and ensures that all patients receive the highest quality of services.
